Will the NFL’s 2020 Season Opening Game See Insane Ratings?

Every person has a different definition of insane. However, if the National Football League (NFL) manages to promote the first weekend of the season well and the demand for NFL Football is high, there is a strong possibility that the ratings will reach exceptionally high levels. As a fan, I am eagerly looking forward to watching the game, but I am also curious about how it will look in the context of the ongoing pandemic. Another factor that will undoubtedly have some level of impact is the role that social justice has played with the NFL over the past several years: will this drive more people to or away from the league?

Feel-Good Situation for a Frustrated Public

There will most definitely be a feel-good situation for a pandemic-fused, frustrated populace! However, the key word is if; don’t you think?

I have noticed a growing revolt against the NFL. My social media network comprises of quite a few friends and acquaintances who have recently voiced their disdain for the league. As a die-hard Pittsburgh Steelers fan, it's important to note that Pittsburgh is a city deeply passionate and devoted to the team. The games are broadcast over the loudspeakers in grocery stores during the season, a phenomenon that might not be usual to everyone but is indeed a testament to the Steelers' immense popularity in the city.

The reason I bring this up is that a lot of people I personally know have decided to cease their NFL consumption. Their decision to steer clear of the league is primarily based on their opinion of players kneeling during the National Anthem, a form of protest in support of their teammates and a cause they believe in. While I do not share their beliefs, I respect those players who kneel in solidarity and advocate for peaceful protesting for the greater good.

The Expectations and Predictions

Assuming there is a game, there is no doubt that the ratings will be high. Without a preseason to whet our appetites, I predict that we will witness some sloppy play overrun with penalties. However, when push comes to shove, people will watch because it's the NFL and it's football.

The gambling aspect will also be at an unprecedented level. Fans will be desperate to place their bets while they have the chance, driven by the unpredictable nature of the game and the heightened stakes.

Remember, the NFL will have to navigate through a challenging season, balancing fan expectations, social justice considerations, and the impact of the ongoing pandemic. The first game of the 2020 season will indeed be crucial in setting the tone for what's to come.
