Why Has Hockey in India Not Gained the Popularity of Cricket Despite Being a National Sport?

Hockey was once a proud and revered sport in India, particularly in states like Punjab, Haryana, and Odisha. However, it has failed to gain the same kind of popularity as cricket, among the masses and through mainstream media.

Historical Context and Media Coverage

Despite being a national sport, the popularity of hockey in India has been overshadowed by cricket. Many Indians, especially those outside of Punjab and Haryana, are largely unaware of great hockey players like Balbir Singh Dosanjh, Ajit Pal Singh, and Dhanraj Pillai.

The media play a significant role in shaping the perception of sports. In the past, there was a lack of media promotion, advertising, and live televising of hockey matches. This can be attributed to the Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) and the absence of a dedicated governing body akin to the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India).

For instance, hockey did not receive much media coverage during the ESPN Star Sports and Ten Sports eras. The only occasional telecast was during the Hockey Premier League in 2005, which unfortunately ended due to financial issues.

Popularity and Achievements

The belief that a sport's popularity is directly linked to its achievements is a common misconception. India's success in sports like kabaddi and cricket does not automatically translate to increased interest and viewership in other sports.

For example, despite winning all Kabaddi World Cups, Indian kabaddi players would not be widely known outside of dedicated fan bases. In contrast, the IPL (Indian Premier League) remains more popular than the Pro Kabaddi League, even in the face of impressive kabaddi performances.

Modern-Day Developments and Future Prospects

While the popularity of sports is difficult to measure solely through achievements, modern platforms like OTT services and additional sports channels are changing the landscape. The 2021 Olympics, where India won a bronze medal, has sparked renewed interest in hockey.

Matches like India vs. Spain during the Pro Hockey League in 2021, where India came back from 1-4 to win 5-4, have been highlights that reignited interest. These dramatic comebacks showcase the excitement and unpredictability of the sport. Hockey requires more attention and media coverage to thrive.

However, it is crucial to remember that popularity and greatness are not mutually exclusive. A true sports fan can appreciate all sports for their unique qualities and excitement.

With increased coverage and fan engagement, hockey has the potential to gain a significant following in India. The key lies in consistent media promotion, live telecasts, and social media engagement to create a community around the sport.
