The Persistence of Male Rules in Women’s Football: An Examination

Why do female football/soccer players refuse to adapt the sport for themselves like female volleyball players did in the past, and insist on keeping the same rules and measurements as men? This question has been a subject of debate, with many believing it is justified, while others hold that there is no inherent need for such distinctions in rules and measures. The premise that certain distances, heights, or requirements are inherently male, therefore requiring a different set of rules, is fundamentally flawed. Let's explore this in greater detail.

Unnecessary Gender Disparities in Sports

It is common to see women athletes in various sports playing under the same set of rules that males follow. This includes not only football/soccer but also sports like hockey, field tennis, badminton, swimming, athletics, rugby, and cricket. These rules are not uniquely male; they are simply a framework designed for fair competition. Take, for instance, the inclusion of women in boxing with 3-minute rounds and 12-round championships, which shows that there is flexibility in adapting the rules to accommodate different genders and skill levels.

Analysis of 'Male Rules and Measures'

So, what are these so-called "male rules and measures"? Are ten yards a masculine distance, or are eight feet a "bloke's height"? These measurements are not inherently male; they are purely arbitrary markers designed for game dimensions and boundaries. Women can run distances like 100m, 10000m, or a marathon just as effectively as men. The rules were originally set by men, but they can and should be followed by women to ensure fair play.

Gameplay Adjustments for Fairness

When women follow these rules, they can play the same game on the same field with the same goals and markings. They can even do so in smaller stadiums if necessary. There will inevitably be differences in how the game is played due to varying physical and strategic capabilities. For example, it was initially thought that the goalkeeper's height might make her easier to lob; however, later it became clear that women do not have the same shooting range as the best male players. Regardless of these differences, the goal in both games is to control the ball in as much space as possible, as close to the goal as you can get.

Validity of Rule Changes

There is anecdotal evidence suggesting that tampering with the rules might not necessarily improve or enhance the popularity of women’s football. It is puzzling why one would believe that it is the players who make the rules, when, in reality, the rules are established to ensure a fair and balanced playing field, regardless of gender. The rules, once set, are designed to be followed by all participants to maintain the spirit of the game.

Equality in Sports

It also appears that the rules of the game can be followed even by teenagers, which underscores the notion that there is no need to adapt them based on race or gender. The rules are meant to ensure fair play, and as long as they are followed, all players, regardless of gender, can compete on an equal footing.
