The Future of Kerala: A Quest for Harmony and Unity

As a Malayalee from the OBC community with an interesting family background, I believe that Kerala is at a crucial juncture in its history. The state has always been a melting pot of diverse cultures, but recent trends suggest that it may be on the cusp of a significant social shift. Will Kerala become the next Muslim-majority state, or can it navigate this complex landscape with unity and progress?

Caste Discrimination and its Impact on Malayalees

My journey back to Kerala and reconnecting with my roots has given me a unique perspective on the social fabric of the state. While heritage and cultural pride are deeply rooted in Malayalee identity, it's important to address the elephant in the room: caste discrimination. The ardent belief of many Brahmin and Kshatriya castes in rigid hierarchical structures has led to significant challenges. I believe that this has contributed to the growing number of Malayalees exploring other spiritual paths, including Islam.

It's worth noting that this issue is not limited to Kerala; rather, it's a reflection of a broader Indian societal challenge. However, the state has been at the forefront of fighting against casteism and discrimination. Over the last 75 years, significant strides have been made in anti-caste policies and social reforms. It's crucial for every individual, regardless of caste, to reflect on their own values and whether they are fostering an inclusive and equitable society.

Lessons from History and Modern Perspectives

Historically, the Hindu epic Ramayana and the story of Parashurama offer valuable insights into the dynamics of societal harmony and discord. Parashurama, the great warrior, was sent to eliminate 21 generations of Kshatriyas due to their excessive arrogance and cruelty. This narrative serves as a stern reminder that excessive pride can lead to downfall. In today's context, this could be interpreted as the futility of clinging to outdated caste-based hierarchies.

Similarly, the advent of Buddhism and Jainism in ancient India was a response to the prevailing socio-religious conditions. These religions challenged the caste system, advocating for a more egalitarian society. Today, the rise in awareness about the caste system's abuses and its impact on different communities can be seen as a sign of progress. It's essential for every individual to do their part in promoting a casteless society. As a result, many Kerala Brahmins and Kshatriyas are beginning to recognize the importance of getting rid of their caste names on official documents.

Education as a Force for Change

My personal success as a father lies in the stories and knowledge I passed down to my children. One of the books that has significantly impacted my family is The History of Earth: The Indian Version, written by Dr. Prashobh Karunakaran. This publication offers a unique perspective on Hindu history and the importance of breaking down societal barriers. By educating ourselves and our future generations, we can promote a more harmonious and understanding society.

The book emphasizes the importance of effort and dedication, irrespective of one's birth. It highlights that the true essence of Hinduism lies in the potential of every individual to achieve greatness. My father's legacy of reading the Puranas to us, and my continued efforts to share these stories with my children, reflect this belief. Their success as engineers is a testament to the power of education and belief.

Conclusion: A Call for Unity and Action

As we reflect on Kerala's future, it is essential to remember that unity and harmony are the key to progress. Whether one follows Hinduism, Islam, or any other faith, our common humanity and shared values form the foundation of our society. By working together, we can overcome the challenges of caste discrimination and build a brighter future for our children.
