The Best 40 Grain 22 LR Ammo for Precise Shooting

Introduction to High Velocity 22 LR Ammo

A .22 caliber gun can be tricky when it comes to ammunition, with one gun preferring different ammo than another. This is especially true for high velocity 40 grain .22 Long Rifle (22 LR) cartridges. The most reliable and effective options vary depending on the firearm and shooter's needs. In this article, we'll explore the benefits and drawbacks of different 22 LR ammo options, focusing on the best 40 grain high velocity rounds for precision shooting.

Why Choose High Velocity 22 LR Ammo?

High velocity 22 LR ammo, typically featuring velocities around 1300 to 1450 feet per second (fps), provides enhanced accuracy and consistency. This is particularly important for long-range shooting, such as hunting small game or precision shooting.

Testing and Gauging Reliability

When it comes to selecting 40 grain 22 LR ammo, performance is crucial. I currently use the Remington Ranch Hand 40 grain Copper Plated Hollow Point, achieving consistent results in my Glock M44. This ammunition delivers a high velocity of 1345 fps, providing reliable performance and less likelihood of issues like ejector failures or stove piping. I've tested this round extensively, using over 300 rounds without any failures.

Shooting My CZ-452 at 200 Yards

I often shoot my CZ-452 at 200 yards using factory open sights. The standard velocity of around 1050 fps falls short, as does the 'high-velocity' standard at around 1250 fps. On the other hand, the CCI Velocitor at about 1450 fps performs excellently. For those seeking even higher velocities, brands such as CCI Stinger and Aguila Super Maximum offer faster rounds, but these are typically under 40 grains, which may not be ideal for my CZ-452.

Caution: Gun Specificity

It's important to note that not all .22 caliber weapons can reliably cycle all 22 LR ammunition. Consult the manufacturer's recommendations for your specific firearm. Remington Golden Bullet .22 LR rounds have performed exceptionally well in my CZ-452, ensuring reliable operation and consistent performance.

Defining 'Good' 22 LR Ammo

When evaluating the 'best' 22 LR ammo, several factors come into play:

Reliability and safety Performance in the intended firearm and shooting scenario Accuracy and consistency of shot grouping

For small game hunting or precision shooting, high velocity 22 LR ammo is often the preferred choice. The velocity of around 1450 fps has proven to be ideal, with both the CCI Velocitor and Winchester 40 grain HV HP ammo showing superior performance. At 50 yards, the Winchester 40 grain HV HP easily achieved groups measuring under half an inch. This level of accuracy is far superior to other options, which typically produced groups larger than an inch.

Historically, Winchester 22 LR ammo, particularly at 40 grain, has been a favorite among shooters for its reliability and effectiveness. This ammo was often the go-to choice for serious rabbit shooters in regions with an overabundance of these pests, such as parts of Australia and New Zealand. The reliability and accuracy of Winchester 22 LR ammo were well-documented in both recreational and professional settings.

For my own testing, I used a very accurate Savage .22 Magnum rifle. The Winchester 40 grain HP ammo also excelled in this setup, achieving sub-minute-of-angle (MOA) accuracy at 100 yards. These results suggest that the Winchester 22 LR ammo remains a gold standard for precision shooting.

However, YMMV (Your Mileage May Vary) based on your specific firearm and shooting conditions. It's crucial to experimentation and testing to determine the best 22 LR ammo for your own arsenal.
