Have you ever found yourself talking to yourself, particularly in a moment of quiet introspection or problem-solving? While it may seem unusual, self-talk is a common practice observed across various cultures and contexts. I, for one, have been engaging in this quirky habit since my move to Thailand, a journey that has dramatically intensified my tendency to vocalize my thoughts.

There’s a moment of self-annoyance in my daily routines whenever my wife catches me engaging in this practice, especially during trivial debates like which Jedi would emerge victorious in a pie-eating contest. Yet, there’s also a sense of liberation in being able to express my thoughts aloud, no matter how minuscule or humorous.

There's a newfound awareness of my feelings that comes from vocalizing them constantly, but also a risk of appearing eccentric, a concern I've started to address.

One moment, however, highlighted the potential social consequences of my self-talk. I was invited to a dinner event attended by fellow expatriates, a gathering that should have been a respite from my monologues. As we lined up for the buffet, two girls cut the queue in front of everyone, a move that usually elicits a silent soliloquy. Before I could mutter my usual response, I inadvertently caught the attention of the guests around me. Three people turned and looked at me with an embarrassed smile, and the two girls looked at me as if they were suspected of a crime. The realization hit me; they had understood my words. This feedback was both alarming and eye-opening.

What ensued was a moment of reflection and self-control. It dawned on me that despite the linguistic complexity, my thoughts were understandable. The experience taught me the value of toning down my self-talk, especially in situations where I might alienate others or draw unnecessary attention.
