Reflections on 2020: Navigating Uncertainty and Survival
2020 was a year that brought both challenges and moments of reflection for individuals and communities worldwide. Amid the global pandemic, the turbulent political atmosphere, and personal life changes, it’s important to take a moment to revisit and process the events of the past year.
The Precovid Phase: Living with Uncertainty and Panic
Before the onset of the pandemic, life seemed uncertain and chaotic. The world was already grappling with global issues such as environmental neglect and social inequality. Figures like Donald Trump, who were seen as divisive and disrespectful, further fueled the sense of division. It was a time when social media and other platforms were filled with protests and discussions about equal treatment under the law, yet the constant news cycle often left one feeling alienated.
I, however, had my own annual routine that was abruptly interrupted by the pandemic. Living in Oslo, Norway, I made it a point to visit my family in Singapore every January for over 15 years. The last visit in 2020 was marred by closed borders and canceled plans, which significantly impacted my religious practices and family traditions. The church services and worship that I cherished had to be replaced with virtual alternatives, which, while helpful, couldn’t fully replicate the in-person experience.
The Pandemic and Its Impact
The arrival of the SARS-CoV-2 virus brought about a new normal. The terms quarantine, social distancing, isolation, and lockdown became synonymous with daily life. The fear of contracting the virus permeated every aspect of existence, leading to a significant shift in behavior. People increasingly adopted unhealthy coping mechanisms, such as overeating and inactivity, which further weakened their immune systems. Social anxiety and fear became the new way of life as concerns about infection spread.
One of the most difficult phases was when the RT-PCR test came back positive. The physical, mental, and psychological pain that followed was intense. It was a month-long ordeal filled with hospitalization, isolation, and the awkwardness of social interactions. The constant fear of the unknown and the fear of reliving this period made it even more harrowing.
Adjusting to the New Normal
Pandemic life taught us to adapt. As life begins to stabilize, there is a renewed sense of hope and a push towards a healthier lifestyle. Regular exercise, balanced diets, and minimal social gatherings are now part of the routine. The uncertainty of the pandemic phase is slowly giving way to a rediscovered normality, though the lessons learned will remain with us for a while.
Looking forward, 2020 can be seen as a roller coaster ride for many, with ups and downs. While the past year brought about significant struggles, it also emphasized the importance of community support, resilience, and emotional well-being. As we move into a new year, the hope for a better future is palpable.
Conclusion: In the face of adversity, the past year was a testament to human resilience. Let us carry forward the lessons learned and continue to advocate for a healthier, more equitable world.
