Posture is critical. Imagine yourself standing straight but relaxed, with your shoulders over your hips, and your hips over your ankles. Visualize yourself as a tree, rooted at your hips with your legs as the roots and your arms stretched out as the branches. Your core should be engaged, and your gaze should be fixed on a point slightly to the left of your partner, focusing on the crown molding around the ceiling. Your body should be energized, with nothing on the floor of interest to you.

Keep your dancing instructions in mind at all times. Think of them as written on the inside of your elbow, always in the front where you can see them. Don’t let your elbows go behind you, especially during turns. Your arms should be like wings, supported by your back muscles. Keep them loose and hanging like a wire between your hands and shoulders, but your hands should be energized. The leading touch should always be light – avoid grabbing your partner.

Engage Your Core and Move with Confidence

Your body is the source of your energy, rather than your arms. Think of your arms as merely attached to your body, like Barbie arms. The energy comes from your back and hands. When dancing smooth dances such as waltz and foxtrot, remember to do heel leads. A helpful visualization is to imagine you have a small bell on the inside of each ankle; on each step, you have to kick the bell as one foot passes by the other.
