Finding a Social Climb as You Grow Up
Feeling Left Behind: The Search for Adult Social Groups
Do you ever wonder if you missed out on life because you never had real friends or a meaningful relationship? Many people, especially those in their early 20s, feel this way. Blog Title Death Galleries
For example, 23-year-old Alex felt isolated after leaving school and moving away from his familiar social circle. “I miss being part of a team, a unit where I could rely on others and be relied upon,” Alex reflects. “The camaraderie, mutual trust, and friendships created both on and off the field mean everything to me.”
Volunteering for Impactful Causes
Alex found solace and social connection in his volunteer work, particularly at Alanon, where he has served for over a decade. Through Alanon, Alex volunteered, mentored, and took on various roles, such as serving on the board of an AA group. Volunteering for a cause can be a wonderful way to bond with a group of people and experience immense satisfaction from aiding others.
Earlier in life, Alex also volunteered with an amateur drama organization. Together with a dedicated team, they organized a drama festival each summer, which brought them together and created lasting friendships. Alex enjoyed the camaraderie and saw numerous free plays, making it a delightful experience. These personal stories highlight the power of volunteering in building social networks and providing a sense of belonging.
Professional Paths for a Strong Social Circle
Adults sometimes struggle to find a strong social circle the way they had back in high school and college. Alex discovered that one solution is to seek out a profession where social dynamics are naturally strong, like the military, law enforcement, firefighting, Doctors Without Borders, or the Peace Corps. These professions come with built-in social networks where trust and teamwork are essential.
“I joined a programme similar to the Peace Corps to reconnect with a sense of camaraderie and team-oriented problem-solving,” Alex shares. Other options include:
Hobby Clubs
Joining hobby clubs can be an excellent way to expand your social circle. Alex’s father once had a social life consisting solely of his membership in an antique tractor club. Similarly, Alex suggests joining a local gun and rod club, given his avid interest in the outdoors. Many clubs are welcoming to newcomers and provide a great way to meet like-minded individuals.
Amateur Sports Teams
Forming part of an amateur sports team can also expand your social network. These teams often appeal to people with regular jobs who gather on weekends for games. There are numerous amateur softball, hockey, roller derby, and lacrosse leagues across the United States. By playing sports, you'll meet people with shared interests and goals.
Religion and Congregations
Religion can also serve as a source of social connection, but it's important to note that it’s not about the social aspects alone. “Though I don’t recommend using a church or a synagogue to socialize, it can be a place to make meaningful connections,” Alex advises. Those who are religious can find opportunities to meet interesting people through their place of worship.
Volunteering and Contributing to the Community
Volunteering is a key factor in forming and strengthening social connections. Alex emphasizes the importance of contributing to causes and organizations. It provides a sense of purpose and belonging, as well as the opportunity to bond with like-minded individuals.
Alex’s journey demonstrates that finding the right social environment and a sense of purpose can greatly enrich one's life. Age is merely a number, and the adventure of growing up and finding one's place in the world is just beginning. Remember to embrace every step of the journey, no matter how lonely it may feel at times.
