Have Women Experienced or Witnessed Sexism in Martial Arts? Stories and Insights

Sexism in sports, and specifically in martial arts, is a complex issue that continues to resonate globally. This article explores the experiences of female martial artists who have either encountered or witnessed sexism, while providing insights and personal anecdotes. Whether through sparring, instructors, or peers, the challenges faced by women in martial arts are significant and often overlooked.

Challenges in Martial Arts: A Cultural Perspective

Martial arts, traditionally a male-dominated sport, often encounters societal norms that can exacerbate gender disparities. The scenario of sparring with female practitioners highlights the socio-political challenges faced by women in martial arts. It is a delicate balance where gender stereotypes can lead to both discrimination and backlash.

Since the early 1990s, when I began my journey with hapkido, to 2011 when I was doing karate, I have personally witnessed and experienced sexism in martial arts. Although my current swordfighting club has a non-discrimination policy and its leaders identify as feminists, the history of my martial arts experiences is replete with sexism. The example of a martial arts instructor suggesting that a female uterus could be "dislodged" by a throw is a classic case of such inappropriate and harmful remarks.

Challenges from Instructors and Peers

During martial arts training, instructors play a crucial role in shaping the attitude and environment for students. However, unfortunate instances of sexism have tainted the learning experience. In my case, a hapkido instructor made a disgusting comment about the anatomical dangers of throwing a woman, clearly demonstrating a lack of respect and understanding.

In some instances, male instructors might adopt a hands-off approach, thinking that it would be safer or more appropriate towards female students. In such scenarios, female practitioners often have to question whether the leniency is genuine or if it is simply because the instructor is trying to avoid potential backlash. This creates an uncomfortable situation where both the instructor and the student are left uncertain about the true intent behind such gestures.

Not all instructors contribute to sexist environments. In my younger years, an instructor who complimented my vigor during sparring was actually a positive and supportive figure. This particular instructor acknowledged my enthusiasm and spunk, which I interpreted as a sign of respect rather than a patronizing act. While such experiences are rare, they do exist, offering a glimmer of hope in an otherwise challenging environment.

Personal Stories of Strength and Resilience

Another female martial artist, Kyra Neal, shared her story of a positive moment during testing, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging genuine compliments and encouragement. At 11 or 12 years old, during a taekwondo and karate test, the instructor praised her for her vigor and spunk. This taught her that sometimes sexist remarks can be disguised in seemingly positive ways, and it is crucial for individuals to critically evaluate such feedback.

Positive experiences can also come from respected male friends and peers. Even though one of my friends might have made harmless jokes about me as a girl in his group, the fact that I was able to compete and succeed in their environment speaks volumes about the importance of equal treatment and opportunities. This shows that progress can be made through mutual respect and understanding.

Conclusion: Navigating and Overcoming Sexism in Martial Arts

Experiencing or witnessing sexism in martial arts can be challenging, but it is essential to navigate such situations with resilience and awareness. By recognizing harmful behaviors and speaking up, we can contribute to a more inclusive and supportive environment for all practitioners. Whether it is through supportive instructors, respectful peers, or addressing negative behaviors head-on, the key lies in fostering understanding and respect.

For those navigating these challenges, it is vital to remain strong and stand up for oneself. Personal stories and experiences can serve as powerful reminders of the importance of equality and respect in martial arts. By sharing our stories, we can inspire change and promote a more welcoming and inclusive world for all martial artists.
