Why Adults Treat My Shiny Blue Soccer Jersey Like a Child’s Despite Being 17

My shiny blue soccer jersey, which I wear as a proud representation of my passion for soccer and my team, the Greek men’s team, has been treated by adults as if it were a children's soccer jersey, even though I am 17 years old. This experience is upsetting and degrading, as it belittles my maturity and athletic spirit.

Why is it that cleaning professionals handling my Nike soccer jersey refer to it as a children’s soccer jersey, as opposed to an adult jersey? If the jersey is designed for a youth soccer player, it is understandable that it might be referred to as a child’s jersey. However, this should not diminish its status as a proud, adult piece of athletic wear.

Here are some pictures of my jersey. It clearly has a professional, adult appearance, with its shiny sleeves and proud design. It does not look boyish/childish like a child’s soccer jersey. The misconception seems to stem from a lack of understanding or perhaps a subconscious bias against teenage athletes.

Addressing the Issue

The adults (likely my parents or custodians) who are handling my soccer jersey are treating it this way. I have several suggestions to rectify the situation:

Speak up: Make your feelings known to those handling your jersey. Communicate clearly that you are 17 years old and could use some respect in terms of how your belongings are treated. Leave a note: Place a message in the laundry room reminding them of the proper handling. For example, 'Please do not use children’s athletic sanitizer on my shiny blue Nike soccer jersey.' Consider alternatives: If the current laundry product is causing issues, suggest switching to a stronger or more adult-appropriate detergent. Alternatively, you can find other options such as Lysol laundry sanitizer, Pine Sol, Ammonia, or Vinegar. Use humor: Emphasize that adults are usually more "stinky" than children, and something stronger might be necessary. This will help make your point more memorable and less confrontational.

Remember, your belongings are a reflection of your efforts and dedication to the sport. Ensuring they are treated with the respect they deserve is important for maintaining your pride and dignity.

Final Thoughts

Taking care of your soccer jersey goes beyond just hygiene; it is about recognizing your maturity as an athlete. Share your experience and suggestions to help others understand the importance of respecting teenage athletes and their gear.
